Barista's Top 4 Home Coffee Brewing Devices

The hunt to make delicious coffee at home starts with choosing the best method!

One question we get often from our customers is, “what is the best way to make coffee at home?”

As a barista, its easy to give long winded answers about what your personal preference is, what coffee you use, is it third wave, is it washed process, blah blah…

So instead, I’ll list some of my favorites, why they are on my list, and the rest is up to you!

#1 - Hario V60

  • This is number one on my list for a few reasons. One being that I use it the most often! It is extremely easy to use. Easy to clean. The unit and filters are inexpensive. You can make pretty much make any kind of coffee in it (no espresso). It doesn’t feel delicate where you fear breaking it. Also, there are endless instructional videos on YouTube for it. A staple in my cafe as well as home kitchen.

#2 - Origami Dripper

  •  Beauty meets function. The origami dripper is not just great looking, but its design helps make the pour over process easy. The ridges make it hard for coffee to build up on the wall of your filter, which can clog and slow down your brew. This is great when you are new to the game and/or your home grinder is low quality. It is delicate, and I always have to be careful when using it. It also is a little more money but well worth it. Don’t forget to buy the little wooden holder!

#3 - Wacaco NanoPresso

  • The best way I have found to make third wave espresso at home! Most espresso machines you can buy for home are over a thousand bucks, this one is $60!

  • It is super easy to use, and requires zero batteries or electricity. It used a highly pressurized pump system to create at most 18 bars of pressure.

  • The espresso comes out pretty delicious. It lacks certain layers of flavor you get from barista espresso machines, but as long as you understand that is impossible to achieve at home, this is second best!

  • I love to use fruity coffees in the Wacaco Nanopresso. It comes out espresso like but fruity with the right beans, and not sour at all. (Which is hard to do if you are making true espresso on a San Remo or La Marzocco machine.

#4 - Toddy Cold Brew Coffee Maker

  • If you are looking to purchase beans and make cold brew at home, this is the device for you. An early purchase on my coffee journey, the toddy is great because it makes a great cold brew concentrate, is easy to use, easy to clean, is very inexpensive for all the parts, and makes a generous amount at a time. The grind size is super coarse and you just have to leave it in the fridge for 12-18 hours. Simple, delicious, and convenient.
