Our Story

Two Jiu-Jitsu instructors open up a coffee shop? It isn't a common origin story, but that is how Muse began…

Abe and Marcos are lifelong martial artists achieving their black belts in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. The thought of opening up a coffee shop was born in... coffee shops. From Jersey City to Montclair, they scoured the lands with a fervor for GREAT COFFEE. It was their post-training ritual and there was no wavering in getting their much needed fix.

About once or twice a year, they'd have the conversation about owning their own coffee shop. Abe, with his inquisitive entrepenueial spirit, desired to be an owner... while Marcos desired a cabin in the woods on the outskirts of civilization where a squirrel would then ask, "But how would he get his coffee?"

These talks of opening a coffee shop carried on and on (and on) for at least 5 years. But it was in October of 2018 that it became more than just a "talk". Suddenly, commercial spaces started appearing before their eyes virtually everywhere they went. Destiny seemed to whisper and then scream. An opportunity began materializing right in-front of them. Looking back, the entire process was quite seamless.

What started as just a thought between two friends, was transformed into the physical form. Their creation. Muse.

The name Muse was one of about 20 names on a list, but it was the one that resonated with them profoundly. Born in Greek and Roman mythology, a muse is a beacon of inspiration. It could be a person, a place, a thing. Something that ignites one's creativity. We are all creators, thought Marcos and Abe, which is what led them to design Muse in a specific manner, one infused with an essence of inspiration and creativity.

This was accomplished in great part due to the unfailing support of family and friends.

A huge THANK YOU with kisses goes to their significant others for their great artistic and laborious contributions. Muse would certainly not be what it is without it.
